Kari Peterson Week 3
Three major points that were discussed in chapter 5 are how people integrate their knowledge at different points of development and in different learning situations, the effects of accumulated knowledge, and strategies for supporting learning. These are important points to consider as we design curriculum so that we are allowing it to reach its full potential. Not all learners are the same, but if we can target students at prime developmental stages, help them accumulate knowledge in a meaningful way, and teach them strategies for support, then we are setting them up for the ultimate learning experience.
Mark Gura says that creativity is an active ingredient of successful students. He says creativity should be a priority for educators. The tools and resources that Rivero provides are a great way to foster creativity in students. One of the interesting studies in chapter 5 was about knowledge acquisition in children and college students and the capacity to integrate unconnected information and retain it at a very young age. The example given was seeing a dog being walked by a human, then seeing the same dog being walked by a different human another day. The common element, the dog, triggers a memory of the first encounter and new knowledge is created- there is relationship between the two humans, even though they have not been seen together. Linking previous knowledge to new learning is a valuable component that is recognized by all of these sources. Students need the freedom to explore connections to prior knowledge in fun, new, and creative ways in order to acquire new knowledge.

Creativity is important to instill in students and its important that educators foster that creativity in students. I believe that teachers are the best resources to bring out curiosity in students. Thanks for pointed out these points.
ReplyDeleteYour Blog was awesome and I loved your poster you made. I think that you and Christi are so put together as educators and your blog was so informative. I agree that creativity is very important and our students want and need that. I feel that with the way our technology has grown so much that our children need to have a positive way to utilize it.
