Kari Peterson Week 1

My name is Kari Peterson. I am married, have three adult daughters, two of whom are married, and the youngest one is a junior in college. I am a foster parent, and we currently have a 4-year-old foster daughter and her 4-month-old sister, placed in our home. They have been with us for four months. This is my 15th year teaching, and I am a Title I reading teacher. Over the past several years I have been taking professional development courses to learn more about dyslexia, the science of reading, and best practices to help struggling readers. I would like to have the knowledge, master's degree, and title of reading specialist, to enhance my current teaching position.

Creative Communicator indicator 1.6.a asks students to choose the appropriate platforms and digital tools for meeting the desired objectives of their creation or communication. Students in a 2nd grade reading class could address standard 2.4.W.2 by creating a presentation after reading a book independently. The students would create a project that they will share with the class. They may choose to write a summary paragraph in Google Docs, they could create a slide show in Google Slides and include images or videos, or they might create a timeline, these are just a few of the choices they available. They would decide the best way to share information with the class about the book they read. Students that struggle with spelling would have the opportunity to use speech to text to assist them while creating their project. Students will work collaboratively to provide feedback and give suggestions to their peers, as well as receive ongoing feedback and help from their teacher, before the final presentations.

The lesson idea is supported by the Triple E Framework because instead of just learning about the technology tools independently, the students are able to use them with the current content. It is important, like the article says, to understand that it's instructional strategies, and not the fancy tools that are effective. The framework is a great reference as a lesson is taking place to see if the technology is engaging, enhancing, and/or extending the learning objective. For most students I think the technology for this project would both engage and enhance their book share projects. Instead of just writing about their book and then reading their words to the class, they will be able to include additional materials that would not be possible otherwise. I also think that the technology tools used in this lesson would extend to opportunities to learn outside of school and can be used in their everyday lives.

  3. Hi Kari! What a wonderful, busy life you lead! I love that your lesson has differentiation for those that might not be the strongest spellers. I think having multiple options for them to present their information is a great idea as well!

  4. Hello Kari,
You sound like a very busy Mom and teacher, and I love your commitment to education to continue to grow in your career. I like your reading activity, I do have one question, will 2nd. graders be able to work independently and them choose what activity they want to do? I am always so surprise how much technology this grade level are able to do.

    1. Hi Sheron!
Yes, they would work independently after choosing which way they would like to present their information. Then they can seek suggestions, feedback, and collaboration from peers and the teacher as needed. It is impressive how easily most of them can learn to use technology!
